Malaga Fun Day!

Malaga Fun Day!

For several years, we have enjoyed coffee at the same restaurant… but alas, this year it is gone. This forced us to go adventuring. We happened upon a great little outdoor cafe. It was concerning that every breakfast item had either toast or tomatoes, but I decided to get one of the toast breakfasts and just eat everything but the bread. This was DELICIOUS and more than enough food. A layer of avocado, thick bacon and an egg to top it off… surprisingly enough food to fill me up!

It was time to walk off our meal… we headed for Jardines de Pedro Luis Alonso Park. An odd place for me to go considering it has several sections of rose gardens. The park sits at the base of the Alcazaba and across from the port area. It is ever so peaceful. Barry and I were both fascinated by the lines of trees…

Our weather is exceptional… 78 degrees with a light breeze. The birds seemed to love splashing around. At times this bath was filled but when I pulled out my camera, most would fly away. These two brave souls not only remained… they posed :-)

From our vantage point in the park, we had a perfect view of the fully bloomed Jacaranda trees. This is my favorite time of year. As you will see in the photos throughout the day, trees are blossoming all over town! They add such a pop of color to the scenery!

Since we were in the area, we decided to visit the rooftop bar at the Marriott. This hotel is in an excellent location and has a pool at the rooftop bar for guests. One of these days we will stay here because it has so many amenities.

From the rooftop, we could see the catamarans for the sunset sail There were also a few yachts in harbor. If you walk along the port past the yachts, go around the lighthouse, you are on your way to Malagueta Beach. It’s a fun spot with restaurants in the sand. They also rent lounges with umbrellas. We had planned to do that before we lost days off of our vacation!

In an attempt to catch up on sleep, we decided to take an afternoon siesta… on our way back, we passed by this church. Because it was Sunday, some of the places we wanted to visit were closed. Of course, this church was open!

All the gardens are blooming! Being a bit of a flower nut, this made me pretty happy… Birds were frolicking everywhere. It wasn’t too crowded around town. It seems the absolute perfect time to visit!

The courthouse drew my attention. Also surrounded by flowers, the steps leading up added to the architectural beauty. It was closed so no one got in the way of my photo.

By now, I am probably driving Barry crazy! Stopping every two seconds to take photos of more flowers. It’s just that they are everywhere… fully in bloom! The colors are amazing!

After our nap, we headed toward Plaza Merced. On the way we passed by the Roman Theater. This structure was mostly hidden until it was discovered in 1951. It was originally built in the time of Augustus in the first century AD. It was used as an active theater until the third century AD. It’s in pretty good shape considering!

The Plaza is the reason we chose to visit during the month of May. It is impressive to see the Jacaranda trees fully bloomed around the perimeter. I made Barry take a selfie with me… he loves pictures haha

These are the two flowering trees found in the Plaza Merced. The red one looks like fireworks! The plaza is lined with trees and the outside perimeter is lined with bars and restaurants. It’s a lively area. We decided it would be the perfect place for “happy hour”.

This is one small corner of the plaza. It is a heavily used area by tourists and locals. Such a peaceful place to people watch and simply enjoy the outdoors. The sweet smell of the flowers filled the air.

At this time of year, the sun doesn’t set until around 10pm. We really wanted to stay out late enough to see the historical center light up. So, we decided the only way to make that happen was to enjoy an espresso martini! And that’s just what we did! It was delicious!

Since we have to get up at 6:45am to visit another nearby town, I better post the night photos tomorrow… it’s already almost one in the morning! By the time we get ready to leave, my clock will adjust…
