Time for Trieste...
A quick taxi ride to our hotel, we checked in for the night. It was definitely bigger than I thought! A good-sized room with a kitchenette. Residence Liberty was selected because they have an elevator. One problem… we had to lug our cruise suitcases up about six steps to reach the elevator. Fortunately, I could leave the suitcases with Roxanne while I went to check in. The hotel desk was up another dozen steps. Perfectly located, all we have to do is walk half a block, make a left turn and cross the street into the cruise terminal. It doesn’t get much better than that!!!
Arriving on the eve of a holiday, Trieste was in full celebration mode. Celebrating workers, Labor Day looked to have many events planned. Tents were being set up for a 5k race, arts and crafts, food booths and this beautiful ferris wheel.
Leaving Venice too early to eat, it was time for lunch! There are many cafes and restaurants in the area. We chose a little spot across from the cruise port. They served us mimosas and fresh fish and pasta! Just what the doctor ordered.
Roxanne had a Tuscan style fish and bean dish. Mussels for me! This outdoor cafe was perfect. Lots of people watching, great service and the mimosas were delicious!
Teatro Romano sits in the heart of Trieste. Originally built in the first century, the theater was expanded to a capacity of six thousand in the second century.
With a daunting set of stairs outside Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, I wasn’t able to get photos of the inside. On another visit, I will mentally prepare myself to climb the steps for the church on the hill. For a split second, I imagined the Grandma’s who walk to church every Sunday morning.
All along our walk, we saw long sets of stairs leading up the side of the hill. Can you imagine picking up groceries and having to lug them up all these stairs?!?!
Enough walking for the time being. We headed back to get ourselves organized for boarding Majestic Princess. The streets of Trieste are quite charming. Despite being the day before a cruise, town was not too busy.
Ready for dinner, we left the room just in time to catch the last slice of the sun… People lined the shoreline to view the “show”. Wow! Great colors… Had the lights at the crosswalk changed more quickly, I could have had a better shot.
Walking from the waterfront to Piazza Unita d’Italia, we passed three or four food trucks that represented America. There was this grill and also a couple that sold smoke meat. Texas themed truck had a very long line!
Cocktails served, we waited for our meals. A Mimosa for Roxanne and an Aperol Spritz for me. The Piazza lit up beautifully. Sitting outside, the weather was warm. Nice evenings like these, bring people out to walk. We noticed families, dog walkers and solo walkers. Across the Piazza, workers prepared for the Labor Day festivities.
Knowing we would soon be leaving Italy, Roxanne decided to have Gnocchi. For me, the only thing that fit into my dietary restrictions… a Greek salad. Picking out the tomatoes, I dove into the rest of it. The dressing was really tasty. Feta is one of my favorites… Being on a crazy pizza and pasta eating frenzy, my body was craving salad!!!
An enjoyable ambiance, we sipped our cocktails and relaxed after dinner. One thing I forgot to photograph was the robots used to help with table clearing. Waitstaff placed the used plates on the robot’s shelf, it rolled away to drop them off in the kitchen.
Crossing the Piazza Unita d’Italia, we headed back to the hotel. Boarding day is always exciting. With a departure time of 10pm, check in is later than normal. Bags can be dropped off earlier to hold while cruisers explore the town. Getting a good night sleep will allow us to stay awake until sailaway…
